Celebrating Modlocks – 25 Years of Dreadlocks and Diversity
In commemoration of Modlock’s 25th birthday, Eikonic Academy had the privilege of hosting a fundraising anniversary party on Sunday, April 30th. This one-of-a-kind event was emceed by former Much Music Veejay Michael Williams, presents the 25-year narrative of a Toronto veteran loctician named Karen Wallington (co-founder of Noggin Oil and Modlocks), as well as all of her clients, coworkers, and friends who have had a significant impact on her life.

The gathering of people who were passionate about self-expression, empowerment, and appreciating natural beauty served as a display for the dreadlocks’ unifying philosophy. This occasion was a monument to Karen’s everlasting devotion to her craft and the impact she has had on the hair and fashion industries, with a variety of highlights, touching moments, and a lively atmosphere.
Highlights of the event featured:
A Vegan Funnel Cake Bar and Culinary Delights:
Attendees indulged in an array of delicious home-made-with-love soul fusion food and drink, Modlocks signature mocktails sponsored by Sobrii, and non-alcohol beer by Partake. An interactive funnel cake bar provided a delicious finish for guests.

Silent Raffle and Coveted Prizes:
Adding an element of excitement and anticipation, a silent raffle offered guests the chance to win incredible prizes. The list included four coveted tickets to Beyoncé’s upcoming tour, an Icelandic salt collection that delighted culinary enthusiasts, and a luxurious facial acupuncture treatment for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. The raffle created a buzz, with attendees eagerly vying for the chance to win these exceptional rewards. All proceeds support Modlocks For All Scholarships, Mirror Lounge Collective and the Viola Awards.
Stunning Loc Styling by Modlocks Students:
The PlayStation, featured former Modlocks students who provided exceptional loc styling services throughout the evening. With expert hands and an eye for detail, Modlocks students demonstrated their mastery of the craft.
25 Video Stations: A Journey through Modlocks:
To celebrate Karen’s journey and the impact she has had on the community, 25 video stations were set up, each presenting a unique Modlocks journey. Attendees had the opportunity to immerse themselves in personal stories, transformations, and testimonials from individuals who had found empowerment and self-acceptance through their dreadlock journeys. This visual showcase served as a powerful reminder of the profound influence Karen has had on countless lives.
Soulful Music Performance by Tosca Terán Mycelium Music
The event was blessed with a unique music performance by Tosca Terán and Andrei Gravelle, interdisciplinary artists whose works are a confluence of art, ecology, and craft. Together, they envision Nanotopia. Nanotopia constructs soundscapes and installations involving the biodata-sonification of fungi, drawing awareness to the destruction of our oceans, breathable air, and shared environment.

Guests were invited to share their personal thanks and memories of Karen, expressing gratitude for her unwavering support, guidance, and inspiration. It was a touching tribute to Karen’s dedication and the impact she has had on those around her. The testimonials painted a clear picture of Karen’s influence and the legacy she has created, from clients whose lives she transformed to friends who had witnessed her unwavering commitment.
